Before your first golf club fitting, tell the provider your experience, equipment budget and actual buying question. Confirm the session’s scope, fee, purchase conditions and written deliverables before booking. A fitting appointment does not automatically require a full new bag, and a free fitting offer does not describe every service a provider sells.
This is a US preparation and buying checklist. TeeClear does not provide fitting or claim to have attended the sessions below. We have not tested fitters, measured improvement or established a recommended specification for your swing.
Start with the decision you need to make
Write one useful objective: choosing your first set within a budget, checking an existing borrowed set, or resolving a particular length or grip question. Ask whether the proposed session can address it, including used equipment if that is your intended purchase.
If you have never hit balls, say so. PGA TOUR Superstore’s fitting FAQ suggests lessons first may make fitting more productive for absolute beginners whose swings are changing. That provider’s advice is a reason to discuss timing, not a rule that every beginner must wait or buy lessons. See preparing your first golf lesson for the separate coaching decision.
If the provider requests current clubs and you do not own any, ask what it supplies and how it will establish a starting comparison. Do not purchase a provisional set just to satisfy a preparation list without discussing it.
Compare the session, not the word “free”
Two US providers’ written descriptions, checked on 17 October 2026, show different service structures:
| Provider example | Published distinction | What you still need in writing |
|---|---|---|
| PGA TOUR Superstore | Free in-store options differ from appointment-based STUDIO fitting; the STUDIO page describes specifications and launch-monitor data among the deliverables | Exact category, location, appointment charge, any purchase credit and what files you receive |
| 2nd Swing fitting types | Walk-in, 2nd Swing and Tour Van programs have different scope and purchase-related fee conditions; its table distinguishes the data captured | Exact tier, qualifying purchase, fee if you buy nothing, and written specification/report format |
These examples are not a provider ranking. We have not independently verified service quality or all purchase-credit conditions.
There are also source inconsistencies worth checking. PGA TOUR Superstore’s wedge menu and broader FAQ show different session price/duration descriptions. 2nd Swing’s general FAQ and fitting-types page differ in walk-in timing and some fee descriptions. We do not blend those statements into one quote. Confirm the named session at your chosen location before paying.
Confirm the complete appointment cost
Use these quote fields; they are questions, not assumed charges:
- Fitting fee for the exact club category or whole-bag session.
- What qualifies for a waiver or credit, its deadline and whether used clubs count.
- Amount payable if you choose not to order equipment.
- Whether the recommendation includes stock shafts, optional shafts, grips or build charges.
- Tax, delivery, alteration costs and the equipment total, separate from the fitting fee.
- Cancellation, rescheduling, late-arrival and no-show terms.
For example, 2nd Swing’s fitting-types page publishes a 24-hour cancellation/rescheduling requirement and fee consequences for late cancellation, sufficiently late arrival or a missed appointment. Read the actual booked service’s conditions; do not substitute a club-return policy for appointment terms.
Keep your complete equipment budget visible. “The fitting is free with purchase” does not tell you the required equipment spend or final build cost.
Prepare what you have, and state what you do not know
PGA TOUR Superstore asks customers to bring current clubs and a glove and wear golf shoes or flat sneakers with comfortable clothing. Ask your provider what applies to your session, including club availability if you have none.
Our suggested preparation note is:
| Information | Your note |
|---|---|
| Experience and typical outings | Lessons/practice/rounds actually completed |
| Existing equipment | Exact models and known alterations, or “none” |
| Budget | Equipment ceiling and whether the appointment is included |
| Main question | The purchase or fit uncertainty you want to resolve |
| Distance information | Actual observations and measurement method, or “unknown” |
| Practical needs | Session length, breaks and any requirements to discuss privately with the provider |
Do not invent distance numbers to complete an inquiry. Ask how the session will be paced and what happens if you cannot produce enough useful shots for the proposed comparison.
Leave with an understandable recommendation
Request the exact club model, handedness, loft, length, shaft model/weight/flex and grip details for any proposed order. Ask which values were measured, which were selected and which are still provisional. Use length, loft and flex explained to understand the terms rather than treating a flex letter as a universal specification.
Ask for the comparison data and its conditions: clubs and balls used, whether distance is carry or total, and how inconsistent shots were handled. A useful question is, “What supports this change, and what would you recommend keeping?” A small sample in one session should not become a guaranteed on-course distance or score improvement.
Before approving a build, separate the specification sheet from the purchase quote. Confirm model/SKU, every charged component, delivery estimate and the actual seller’s custom-order, return and warranty conditions. If shopping used, compare the actual listing against that sheet using new versus used club checks. The original catalog does not prove that a used club still has its factory shaft or length.
Sources and scope
The linked PGA TOUR Superstore STUDIO page, 2nd Swing fitting-types page and its general FAQ were read on 17 October 2026. Their process descriptions are provider statements; performance marketing is not adopted as TeeClear evidence. Exact appointment availability, qualifying-purchase thresholds, fee credits and report formats require confirmation for the selected service. No appointment, equipment purchase or professional fitting assessment was performed by TeeClear.
