What should I ask before booking my first golf tee time?
Before booking your first golf tee time, confirm beginner access, rentals, total cost, arrival instructions and cancellation terms.

Before booking your first golf tee time, ask about beginner access, rentals, the total charge, arrival instructions and cancellation terms. Tell the golf shop this is your first round so its answers reflect the visit you are planning.
Still deciding where to play? First compare suitable courses and first-outing options, then use this page to confirm the booking details.
Use this short opening
“I’m new to golf and would like to play my first round. I have [describe practice or lessons], need [rental clubs or other assistance], and hope to play [number of holes]. Is this a suitable course and time?”
The wording is our suggested script, not a requirement imposed by the Rules of Golf. It gives staff enough information to explain their own arrangements.
Seven things to confirm
| Ask | Record the answer |
|---|---|
| Is there a beginner, experience or handicap requirement? | Any evidence or accompaniment needed |
| Is a shorter outing or beginner session available? | Course, holes and suitable time |
| Can I book alone? | Pairing procedure and whether a time is guaranteed |
| Can I reserve clubs? | Handedness, size options, contents and charge |
| What is the total price? | Green fee, rentals, transport and other required charges |
| What should I wear and when should I arrive? | Actual dress and check-in instructions |
| What if I cancel or weather interrupts play? | Notice period, refund or credit conditions |
Do not infer a quiet time from the clock alone. Ask staff which session works for a new golfer rather than assuming early morning or late afternoon is always suitable.
Check rental and solo arrangements separately
The Crossings’ own FAQ says single players should contact its shop for pairing and that walk-on availability is not guaranteed. Campus Commons publishes its own booking and equipment arrangements. These are US course examples. These examples show why “I booked a tee time” does not necessarily mean “my rental and transport are reserved.” Reconfirm each item you actually need.
Ask whether the rental includes a bag and accessories, and whether you can collect it before check-in. If an item is not listed, do not assume it is included. Use the packing guide after receiving the answers.
If you need a rental, use the first-round club rental guide to confirm hand and size options, collection, charges and return arrangements.
Clothing is a course question
The Crossings recommends golf attire, while Fossil Trace’s US FAQ requests casual golf attire. These broad descriptions do not settle whether your particular shirt, shorts or shoes are permitted. Ask your course about the items you plan to wear and whether the practice facility has different requirements. Do not buy a complete golf wardrobe just to satisfy an assumption.
If footwear is the remaining question, use the first golf-shoes checklist after confirming the venue’s policy.
Separate cancellation from a rain check
Before confirming, save the deadline and method for cancelling or reducing the player count. Ask what happens if the course closes, if you choose not to start, or if weather interrupts a round already underway. Confirm whether the remedy is a refund, a credit or no compensation, including any expiry and excluded fees. A forecast alone does not establish your booking’s cancellation terms.
For a specific US example checked on 17 October 2026, Fossil Trace publishes a 20-hour cancellation/modification deadline and a full-rate charge for unused slots outside that window. Its separate rain-check policy describes prorating unplayed holes and expiry on 31 December of the year issued; its inclement-weather wording says golfers may be eligible. Confirm how the provisions apply to your actual booking. These are that course’s published conditions, not a standard deadline or a promise of cash back elsewhere.
Our suggested note is: “Cancel or reduce by [local date/time], using [method]; weather contact [shop]; closure or interrupted-round remedy [confirmed terms].” Save the acknowledgement of any change. If you booked through another seller, ask which party handles the change instead of assuming a call to the course updates that reservation.
For the day itself, make a weather and shelter plan with your packing list. Your immediate safety decision should not depend on resolving a refund.
Check the full visit price
Use the interactive first-round budget to separate the green fee, any equipment rental, included items and unresolved charges; the cost guide explains the fee examples and provides a manual table. Save the quotation for the date, time and player category you are actually booking. For a practice visit rather than a round, use the driving-range preparation guide.
For the social and single-player arrangements, read your first round without a partner. It explains pairing and cart-sharing questions separately from the general booking checklist.
Save a booking note
Write the course name, date, tee time, requested arrival time, people, holes, rental confirmation and total charge in one note. Include the shop number and cancellation deadline. Read it back to staff if anything conflicts with your online confirmation.
Next, return to the first-round plan or prepare your first bag. This is a booking checklist, not a recommendation or review of the example courses.
Before confirming your visit, check which tees to use for your first round, especially if you do not yet know your hitting distances.
